These two are from Vancouver, but wanted to get married here, so family and friends that are Calgary based could share in their special day with them. It was a simple and intimate ceremony and I thank them for letting me be a part of it! Enjoy….

The Power of Editing

The wedding season has officially began and I have some lovely photos to share this week! But before I get to that, I wanted to create a little mini post on the topic of “editing!” It’s fair to say, that if you’ve spoke with a photographer for any length of time, they’ve mentioned the word “edit” a few dozen times! It’s because it’s such an essential part to photography. I’d like to think that the more I shoot, the less editing I have to do. Meaning, I’m better equipped to capture the image properly! Have the right settings, the right light, the right emotions, the right feel, the right posing, the most flattering angles….etc, etc…. However, the editing is still an essential piece to the puzzle. You’re able to eliminate “distractions” from an image…for example, blemishes, strange strands of hair…..etc… You’re also able to add a little light and dark to an image. A little contrast. Sharpen areas. Then lastly, stamp the image with a “look!” Maybe it’s a vintage look….soft and pretty. Maybe you want a little drama….. Whatever it may be, the editing really starts to create a personal stamp that’s individual to each photographer. It’s most definately something that develops with time and experience. Not so much, an overnight process!

I know that when I’m talking with a wedding couple, and I mention the word, “edit” – they sometimes are worried the images won’t look natural. A very fair concern. So I thought I’d show how powerful editing can be with a couple of images of myself. Why not showcase my own flaws?!

Here’s an example of a picture that I took of my husband and I, while on vacation. Is the lighting perfect? No. I shot this by reaching my arm in front of me, so it doesn’t usually create the best images! But the spot was so pretty….

As you can see…..a whole bunch of freckles, blemishes and imperfections! Yikes! It’s funny when you’re talking to someone, you may not even notice some of these. But, in a photo, they stand out like a sore thumb!!

So I got rid of all that….

Here’s a self portrait! Another example of not quite perfect lighting. And some not-so-pretty skin!!

But once again, with a little help, a little clean up….and a little shot of some vintage coloring…..you get something much prettier!!

But, never the less….a little fixin’….

Just a little softening of skin and a color layer just for fun…

Editing a photo is kind of like creating artwork. It’s completely individual. What one person loves, someone else doesn’t. But it’s also a very fun part of the process. Youre able to take an ordinary image and make it a little extra special!

the big island – hawaii

recently we were fortunate enough to take a little vacation in beautiful hawaii! we’ve been to oahu and maui before, but never the big island. my brother and his wife went last year and loved it, so we thought we’d give it a try! we’re so glad we did! gorgeous! beautiful beaches, mellow, relaxed attitude, perfect weather, and a more house for your dollar than other islands! what more do you need?! here’s some favorites from our time there!

meet pablo and dahlya! it was a lovely winter day for calgary, however a chilly day for photos! you kinda don’t realize how cold it can be until you’re out there for a while! so, thanks guys for putting up with the horrible gusts of wind and the lack of sun for the second half of the session! hopefully you’ll think it was worth it!

sneak peek: the big island

we’ve been home for about a week now and i can’t stop racking my brain (and the internet) — searching for a way that would allow us little old canadians to live there! hawaii. we’ve been a few times before and it is my favorite place on the planet. i love it. i’m convinced i belong there. unfortunately the states isn’t as welcoming as i’d like them to be. why does it have to be so hard?!! shooting weddings there would be a dream…..

so in the meantime, i started going through some pictures. of course, i lugged my camera there, and of course, i didn’t take enough pictures. but i’m putting a few faves together to share in the next little bit. for now, here’s a preview….
